ESPN Releases New Season Power Rankings: Warriors Fall to Play-In Level After Failing to Bolster Ros

Staff Writer Tsai Hou-hsuan / Comprehensive Report

With the NBA offseason largely settled, ESPN columnist Zach Kram officially released his 2026-27 season power rankings for all 30 teams on the 10th. In the list, which divides the entire league into eight tiers, the Golden State Warriors saw a significant drop in overall competitiveness due to their failure to land star players in free agency this summer and ongoing injury issues with key personnel. They were directly downgraded to the sixth tier — "Potential Play-In Contenders" — even falling to the same level as the Washington Wizards, who have been in deep rebuilding in recent years, sparking heated discussion among fans.

The Golden State Warriors, once a dynasty, clearly had an underwhelming offseason. In his analysis, Kram stated bluntly that the Warriors made virtually no impactful additions in free agency or via trade this summer, lacking any new blood capable of immediately altering the team's fortunes.

A more pressing challenge lies in the health of the team's core roster. The Warriors are still waiting for star forward Jimmy Butler III to recover from a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). With questions looming over when Butler will be fully healthy and how effective he can be upon return, the team's overall ceiling is severely capped. ESPN projects that the Warriors will not be able to secure a top-six playoff spot in the Western Conference outright and will instead have to fight for a postseason berth through the play-in tournament.

In ESPN's sixth tier — "Potential Play-In Contenders" — a total of nine teams are listed: Golden State Warriors, Washington Wizards, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, Phoenix Suns, Portland Trail Blazers, New Orleans Pelicans, Utah Jazz, and Charlotte Hornets.

Perhaps the most poignant aspect of this ranking is that the Warriors have fallen to the same tier as the Wizards. The Wizards have endured several seasons of poor results, often winning only around 10 games. However, they brought back Anthony Davis and Trae Young this offseason, along with the addition of No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa, significantly upgrading their roster and giving them dark-horse potential to contend for the playoffs. In contrast, the Warriors, whose competitiveness has steadily declined in recent years, are now seen by analysts as being on par with the Wizards — a grim outlook for their future.

Beyond the Warriors' decline, ESPN's power rankings clearly delineate the championship contenders and the bottom-feeders. Topping the first tier as "Title Favorites" are only three teams: defending champion New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder, and San Antonio Spurs. All three reached the conference finals last season and retained their core starting lineups. The Spurs, in particular, made the biggest splash by adding veteran Tobias Harris alongside Victor Wembanyama.

Traditional Western Conference powerhouses such as the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, and Minnesota Timberwolves are categorized as "Flawed Western Contenders." The Lakers have taken a major hit with LeBron James leaving to join the Philadelphia 76ers, while the Timberwolves face new chemistry risks after acquiring LaMelo Ball and Jonathan Kuminga.

The most dire tier — Tier 8, labeled "No Competitiveness and No Own Draft Picks" — consists of the Los Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn Nets, and Milwaukee Bucks. The Clippers, in particular, were heavily penalized by the league for illegal under-the-table payments, losing five draft picks, and are expected to struggle at the bottom of the standings next season.

Facing the strengthened competition within their conference and the rise of younger teams, the Warriors — with their aging roster and injury-plagued core — will have to fight hard through the play-in tournament to carve out any hope of reaching the playoffs.
